Dirk Bogarde is Teddy Bare, a smooth-talking schemer who murders his older wife expecting a fortune to follow. When the inheritance falls through, he turns to wealthy widow Freda Jeffries, but Margaret Lockwood's Freda is cautious, sharp, and far harder to manipulate than he expects. Their courtship becomes a tense contest, with Teddy trying to hide murder behind good manners while Freda keeps a close hold on her money and her guard.
