A middle-aged wife is blindsided when she discovers that the husband she believed was content with family life intends to leave her for a younger woman. Yvonne Mitchell is the woman at the center of the rupture, caught between shock, humiliation, and the daily routines of a household that no longer feels secure. Anthony Quayle's husband has already begun to imagine a different future, while Sylvia Syms is the younger woman whose presence turns private dissatisfaction into a public fracture. The film stays close to the marriage as it breaks apart, with the family home becoming the scene of every strained conversation and unspoken betrayal.
