When an alien answers humanity’s invitation to the stars, it lands in rural Wisconsin and takes the form of a widow’s dead husband. Karen Allen is Jenny Hayden, stunned into driving the visitor across the country to Arizona before the government can intercept him; Jeff Bridges gives the stranger an awkward, observant calm as he copies human speech and behavior on the road. Directed by John Carpenter, Starman follows their flight through diners, motels, and police checkpoints, with Jenny sharing a car with a being who looks exactly like the man she buried.
