In a war-torn London ruled by the totalitarian state of Oceania, John Hurt is Winston Smith, a records clerk whose job is rewriting the past to fit the Party’s version of events. Under the gaze of Big Brother, even private thought is suspect, and Winston’s secret affair with Julia (Suzanna Hamilton) becomes an act of rebellion as much as intimacy. Richard Burton appears as O’Brien, a senior Party figure whose attention to Winston suggests how completely the regime monitors loyalty, desire, and memory.
