Ben Brigade (Randolph Scott), a tight-lipped bounty hunter, is taking a young killer to collect the reward when a stop at a stage station turns the trip into an uneasy caravan. Two outlaws join up because they want the prisoner for reasons of their own, a recently widowed woman is drawn into the ride, and Billy (James Best) proves dangerous even in custody. Close behind them, Billy’s brother Frank and his men keep pressing the trail. The story stays fixed on shifting alliances, withheld motives, and the hard bargain of getting one man across open country alive.
