After losing his horse in a bet, former ranch foreman Pat Brennan (Randolph Scott) boards a stagecoach and ends up captive with newlywed heiress Doretta Mims. When the three outlaws holding them realize Doretta has money behind her, the trip turns into a ransom scheme played out across isolated country. Richard Boone's Frank Usher leads the gang with a calm, watchful menace, while Brennan measures every move and Doretta is forced to see her marriage and her situation more clearly. The film keeps its focus on the shifting balance between captors and hostages, with the stagecoach holdup opening into a spare, tense standoff.
