Gary Cooper is Link Jones, a former outlaw heading to Fort Worth to hire a schoolteacher for his frontier town when a train robbery leaves him stranded with saloon singer Billie Ellis and gambler Sam Beasley. Looking for shelter, Link takes them to the shack where he grew up, only to find the gang he left behind still there, led by his uncle (Lee J. Cobb). With Julie London alongside as Billie, Anthony Mann’s western follows Link as he slips back among the outlaws and lets them believe he’s ready to return to the life he once escaped.
