Gabriel Byrne is Tom Reagan, the adviser to an Irish mob boss in 1929, trying to keep rival gangs from open war while his own gambling debt and secret affair pull him in the other direction. Albert Finney's Leo runs the city's political machine and expects Tom's loyalty, but the same woman has already driven a wedge between them. As Prohibition-era alliances shift, the movie threads gangland strategy, personal betrayal, and sudden violence through smoky clubs and back-room meetings.
