After a UFO encounter on an Indiana road, electrical worker Roy Neary starts seeing the same mountain shape everywhere, a fixation that strains his family life and pulls him toward a remote site in Wyoming. Richard Dreyfuss is Roy, a blue-collar father trying to understand what he saw, while Melinda Dillon’s Jillian is another witness caught up in the same wave of strange lights and unexplained events. As blackouts spread and investigators track bizarre clues across the globe, Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi drama follows Roy and Jillian toward the isolated place both seem unable to resist.
