A Clockwork Orange
CrimeSci-Fi137 min
In a near-future Britain, teenage gang leader Alex DeLarge spends his nights on beatings, rape, and robbery, then heads home to worship Beethoven. Malcolm McDowell is Alex, a smiling young predator whose arrest gives the state an opening to try a new form of punishment: an invasive conditioning procedure meant to strip away his capacity for violence. Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s novel mixes dystopian satire with stark institutional control, while Patrick Magee appears as a writer drawn into Alex’s world. The film’s stylized imagery and invented slang sit alongside its blunt brutality.
