Eight years after attorney Sam Bowden helped send him to prison for rape, Max Cady comes back looking for revenge, stalking Bowden and his family while staying just inside the law. Gregory Peck is Bowden, a lawyer and family man whose attempts to protect his home only tighten the pressure around it. Across from him, Robert Mitchum’s Cady is cold, deliberate, and impossible to pin down. Polly Bergen’s Peggy and Lori Martin as the Bowdens’ daughter Nancy bring the threat into the family’s daily life, as the film turns a legal impasse into a steadily closing trap.
