In the years just after World War II, an innkeeper at a hot-spring resort begins a fraught relationship with a man suffering from tuberculosis, and their connection slowly comes apart amid the uncertainty of postwar Japan. Mariko Okada is the woman at the center of it, living and working near the spring, while Hiroyuki Nagato is the ailing stranger who enters her life. What begins as a romance is shadowed from the start by illness, isolation, and the closed-in atmosphere of the rural inn.
