The Tree of Life

DramaFantasy139 min

Jack grows up in 1950s Texas under the pull of two very different parents: Brad Pitt's stern father, who pushes his sons toward toughness, and Jessica Chastain's mother, who moves through the household with tenderness and faith. As the film shifts between Jack's boyhood and his disillusioned adult life, Sean Penn is the older Jack, adrift in the modern world and wrestling with memory, grief, and belief. Terrence Malick frames this family story on a cosmic scale, folding images of birth, nature, and the origins of life into Jack's search for meaning.
