NASA's first manned mission to Mars is a fraud, staged on a desert military set after officials decide the American space program can't survive a public failure. James Brolin is one of three astronauts forced to perform a landing for the cameras while the men behind the mission keep the deception in place. As the cover-up tightens, reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould) starts tracing the inconsistencies, and the astronauts make a run across the Southwest, from scrubland and crop dusters to highway motels and helicopters, trying to stay alive long enough to expose what happened.
