The Flowers of St. Francis
ComedyDrama75 min
St. Francis and the first Franciscans move through a chain of small, parable-like episodes, as acts of humility, compassion, faith, and sacrifice shape daily life in medieval Italy. Roberto Rossellini structures the film as a series of simple encounters rather than a cradle-to-grave biography, with chaptered vignettes centered on Francis and the brothers around him. Aldo Fabrizi appears alongside Gianfranco Bellini in a cast largely drawn from monks of the Nocera Inferiore Monastery, giving the scenes a plain, communal quality. The black-and-white images are composed to recall medieval religious painting, with sparse landscapes, rough robes, and ritual gestures carrying the story.
