On a farm in rural Denmark, the Borgen family is pulled apart by faith, doubt, and grief. The patriarch Morten clashes with a neighboring tailor over religion just as his son Anders wants to marry the tailor’s daughter, turning a love match into a battle between households. Inside the family, another son, Johannes, wanders in the grip of a religious mania, speaking as if he were Christ and unsettling everyone around him. Then illness and loss press the Borgens harder, and arguments about doctrine stop being abstract. As sorrow deepens, the family is forced to confront what belief can mean when reason, pride, and desperation all collide.
