The Wiz
ActionAdventureFamilyFantasyMusical134 min
Diana Ross is Dorothy Gale, a shy kindergarten teacher swept into a dreamlike Oz and sent down the yellow brick road in search of a way home. Along the way she joins forces with Michael Jackson’s Scarecrow, Nipsey Russell’s Tin Man, and Ted Ross’s Cowardly Lion, all making their way toward the elusive Wiz (Richard Pryor). Sidney Lumet’s reimagining of Oz folds Broadway spectacle into an urban-fantasy cityscape, with an African American cast, elaborate musical numbers, and a New York look that sets it apart from earlier versions of the story.
