After an Oklahoma farm boy receives his Vietnam draft notice, Claude heads to New York before boot camp and falls in with a Central Park tribe of hippies. John Savage is Claude, a sheltered Midwesterner pulled into the orbit of Treat Williams' Berger and his long-haired antiwar circle, while Beverly D'Angelo's Sheila becomes the focus of Claude's sudden city romance. Milos Forman's screen version of the Broadway musical roots its songs and dance numbers in late-1960s New York, where free love, protest, and military duty crowd together before Claude has to report for training.
