Maximilian Cohen (Sean Gullette), a reclusive mathematician in New York, is convinced numbers govern reality and that the right pattern could let him predict the future. After a decade spent trying to crack the stock market with his homemade supercomputer, Max edges toward a breakthrough just as blinding headaches, paranoia, and outside pressure close in. A Wall Street firm wants his calculations, while a group of religious scholars sees something sacred in the same sequence. Darren Aronofsky’s debut is shot in abrasive black-and-white, turning Max’s search for order into a claustrophobic spiral of code, mysticism, and obsession.
