At a Philadelphia apartment complex, superintendent Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti) pulls a young woman from the pool he maintains and learns she is not what she seems. Bryce Dallas Howard is the stranger, a figure from a bedtime story trying to make her way back home while dangerous creatures move to keep her in our world. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the film gathers Cleveland’s neighbors — with Jeffrey Wright and Bob Balaban among the ensemble — into an urban fairy tale built around shared clues, apartment-building routines, and a swimming pool that opens onto something older.
