The Fire Within

Drama108 min

Fresh out of a detox clinic, Alain Leroy spends a day in Paris visiting old friends, acquaintances, and women from his past while searching for a reason to keep going. Maurice Ronet is Alain, an alcoholic writer whose meetings shift from polite conversation to uneasy reckonings as the city’s social world keeps him at a distance. Jeanne Moreau is among the faces he revisits in this 1963 French drama, which narrows its focus to Alain’s wandering, his stalled connections, and the spare melancholy of Erik Satie on the soundtrack.
