Professional gambler Harold Benson discovers he can’t lose when young blackjack dealer Willie Brodax is on the floor, and soon he’s trailing the unlucky dealer from casino to casino across the West. Rip Torn’s Harold treats the streak like a private gold mine, while Bette Midler is Bonita Friml, the lounge singer and girlfriend who gets dragged along with him. As Willie’s bad luck follows him from job to job, Bonita and the dealer grow close, turning Harold’s winning system into a crooked triangle of gambling superstition, resentment and a scheme tied to Harold’s life-insurance policy.
