Open Doors
CrimeDrama108 min
In 1930s Palermo, after Tommaso Scalia (Ennio Fantastichini) murders his former boss, the man who replaced him, and his wife, he asks for a swift trial and execution. Gian Maria Volonté is the assistant judge assigned to the case, a quiet, principled magistrate who opposes capital punishment even as public opinion and the fascist state push the other way. As the proceedings move forward, the film centers on the standoff between a confessed killer ready to die and a judge intent on keeping the court from sending him before a firing squad.
