In Iraq during the war, a frustrated reporter crosses paths with Lyn Cassady, a swaggering former Army operative who says he once belonged to the New Earth Army, a secret unit trained to use paranormal powers in combat. George Clooney is Cassady, all military confidence and New Age conviction, while Ewan McGregor follows as the journalist trying to decide whether he’s found a crank, a spy, or the story he came for. As Cassady recounts the Army’s psychic experiments, the film moves between desert misadventure and the odd legacy of a U.S. military program built around staring contests, espionage, and the possibility that someone in uniform believed in mind-over-matter warfare.
