Man with a Movie Camera

Documentary68 min

A cameraman with a camera slung over his shoulder moves through a Soviet city from morning to night, turning streets, factories, trams, weddings, beaches, and crowds into a portrait of urban life in the late 1920s. Mikhail Kaufman is the roving figure at the center, often seen chasing images as the film keeps shifting between the city itself and the act of filming it. Elizaveta Svilova appears as part of that process too, bringing the editing room into view. Rather than follow a single story, the film builds its rhythm through montage, movement, and the everyday routines of work and leisure across the USSR.
