Salt for Svanetia
Documentary63 min
High in the Caucasus, the Svan people live in the isolated village of Ushguli, cut off by mountains, snow, and rough terrain. The film follows daily life in Svanetia at close range: herding, farming, household labor, and the routines that keep the community alive in a place where every task is hard won. Its central pressure is the village’s separation from the outside world, with basic goods—especially salt—turned into a constant problem by the landscape itself. As an early ethnographic documentary, the film records not a staged drama but the conditions, customs, and labor of a remote community in the northwestern Georgian Soviet Republic.
