Gerardo is an aspiring actor stuck in comedy, desperate to prove he belongs in tragedy, when his knack for imitating dialects from across Italy pulls him into a con. Vittorio Gassman is the frustrated performer, recruited into a scheme cooked up by Lallo to swindle a wealthy cloth merchant. Around him, Dorian Gray and Anna Maria Ferrero add to the bustle of an Italian farce built on impersonation, social climbing, and bad decisions. What starts as a chance to show off his range quickly turns Gerardo’s stage ambitions into a criminal performance he never meant to give.
