After a car crash in rural Colorado, novelist Paul Sheldon wakes up in the care of Annie Wilkes, the nurse who says she’s his number one fan. James Caan is Paul, bedridden and cut off by a blizzard, while Kathy Bates’s Annie shifts from attentive rescuer to jailer when she learns he killed off her favorite heroine. Trapped in her remote house, Paul is forced to write Misery back to life under Annie’s watch, turning a fan’s devotion into a private captivity built on isolation, pain, and control.
