At a hospital filled with patients locked in catatonia by a rare disease, shy research physician Dr. Malcolm Sayer begins trying an experimental treatment. Robin Williams is Sayer, whose cautious bedside manner is tested when Leonard (Robert De Niro) becomes the first patient to respond. Leonard's sudden return to speech, movement, and ordinary pleasures changes the ward, while Sayer faces the medical risks and institutional pressure that come with extending the drug to others.
