Turn-of-the-century Chicago gives Judy Garland’s Veronica Fisher a new job at a bustling music shop, where salesman Andrew Larkin (Van Johnson) greets her as competition instead of a colleague. Away from the store, each is exchanging affectionate letters with an unseen pen pal, unaware they’re writing to the person they spar with during business hours. S.Z. Sakall is the kindly owner Otto Oberkugen, and Buster Keaton appears as his clumsy nephew Hickey. Songs, workplace friction and a steadily tangled case of mistaken identity shape the romance as Veronica and Andrew circle each other on paper and in person.
