By-the-book LAPD Sgt. Joe Friday is the straight-laced nephew of the city’s famous detective, and when a string of odd robberies hits Los Angeles, he’s paired with Pep Streebeck, a younger partner who treats police work very differently. Dan Aykroyd’s Friday sticks to procedure and clipped formality; Tom Hanks brings Streebeck in as the rumpled, fast-talking counterweight. What starts with thefts at a zoo and a stash of porn magazines leads them toward a church-linked conspiracy involving city officials, cult activity, and a self-important reverend at the center of it.
