In Santa Cruz, 15-year-old surfer Jay Moriarity becomes fixated on Mavericks, the massive Northern California break sitting just miles from home. Jonny Weston is Jay, a gifted kid determined to paddle into a wave that far more experienced surfers avoid, and Gerard Butler’s Frosty Hesson is the local legend he persuades to train him. What starts as a steep, punishing apprenticeship turns into a mentor-student relationship shaped by discipline, risk, and Jay’s life off the water. The film follows Jay’s push toward a nearly impossible goal against the backdrop of the Santa Cruz surf community and the cold, dangerous power of Mavericks.
