Michael Caine is Sean Stein, a wealthy mystery writer so burned by ex-wives and opportunistic girlfriends that, when he falls for Sally Field’s Daisy Morgan, he decides to hide behind the persona of a broke, washed-up novelist. Their relationship begins after an absurdly awkward robbery at a cocktail party leaves the two of them thrown together, and Sean turns the romance into a test of whether Daisy wants him or his money. Jerry Belson’s 1987 film builds its comedy around deception, class signals, and the increasingly messy gap between Sean’s private fears and his public act.
