Thelma Ritter is Mae Swasey, a New York marriage broker who can’t stop arranging other people’s lives. After a handsome optician is left at the altar, Mae decides he belongs with Kitty Bennett, a model and shop owner, and soon Scott Brady’s Matt Hornbeck is drawn to Jeanne Crain’s Kitty despite his reluctance to settle down. George Cukor’s 1951 romantic comedy turns on Mae’s well-meant interference, with the matchmaking growing messier once the couple realizes their romance hasn’t unfolded as naturally as they thought.
