A married couple decide their relationship is finished and make it official with a brisk, exasperated divorce. Nina and Robert expect freedom to be simple, but cutting ties only keeps them circling each other through awkward encounters, meddling friends, and a string of attempts to prove they are better off apart. As each starts testing life on the rebound, old grievances turn into new jealousy, and their split begins to look less final than either planned. Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon drive the sparring as the former spouses trade barbs, mixed signals, and one-upmanship while everyone around them pushes the situation toward fresh chaos.
