Sean Penn is Brad Whitewood Jr., a restless teenager in 1970s rural Pennsylvania who reconnects with the estranged father he barely knows. Christopher Walken’s Brad Sr. heads a small-town crew of thieves, and the promise of money, swagger, and belonging pulls Brad into his orbit despite his mother’s warnings. Mary Stuart Masterson is the girlfriend who supports Brad’s ambitions as the family bond starts to look less like reunion than recruitment. Inspired by the investigation that brought down the Johnston Gang, the film turns a father-son story into a portrait of criminal life in back roads and small towns.
