A provincial Czechoslovak fire brigade throws a retirement ball for its old chief, with music, dancing, a beauty pageant, and a raffle that starts losing prizes almost as soon as the night begins. In Miloš Forman’s satire, one small failure leads to another: organizers can’t find willing contestants, gifts disappear, and every attempt at order seems to make the evening messier. Jan Vostrcil and Josef Šebánek are among the largely nonprofessional ensemble, which gives the town-hall confusion a plain, local texture. What starts as a civic celebration keeps sliding toward public embarrassment, and eventually, fire.
