A New York sportswriter becomes fixated on a question he can’t leave alone: who is the birth mother of the adopted boy he and his wife are raising, and how did their brilliant son come from such a hidden past? His private search turns up Linda Ash, a cheerful but struggling sex worker played by Mira Sorvino, and the discovery upends the neat story he had imagined. Convinced he can improve her life, he inserts himself into her decisions, her dating prospects, and her future, while his own marriage strains under the secrecy and obsession. Woody Allen’s comedy keeps pushing that collision between fantasy and reality into messier, more personal territory.
