Seventeen dancers remain after the first cut at a Broadway audition, each hoping for a place in the chorus of a new musical. Under Zach’s eye, the callbacks become more than a test of technique as the hopefuls are pushed to talk about the training, rejection, ambition, and private history that brought them to the stage. Cassie enters with an added complication: she and Zach share a messy past, and she needs the job badly enough to face him anyway. Michael Douglas heads the ensemble alongside Terrence Mann in Richard Attenborough’s film version, keeping the focus on rehearsal-room nerves, backstage rivalry, and the pressure of being chosen.
