In an English coal town, Dean Stockwell is Paul Morel, a young man from a mining family who wants an art career beyond the hard life that has defined his home. Trevor Howard’s Walter works the pits and drinks; Paul remains closest to his mother, Gertrude (Wendy Hiller), whose kindness is matched by a possessive hold on her son. As Paul starts to imagine a future outside the town, an affair with an older, married woman and the possibility of art school in London sharpen the conflict between his ambitions and the loyalties, grief, and strain inside the Morel household.
