The Immigrant

The story

Charles Chaplin is the Tramp, a penniless European immigrant crossing the Atlantic for New York, where a rough voyage turns into fresh trouble almost as soon as he lands. Onboard, he’s accused of theft and drawn to a young woman, with Edna Purviance as the fellow traveler who becomes his closest connection in the crowd. One of Chaplin’s early silent films, it moves from the heaving ship to city streets and a restaurant where hunger, money, and bad luck keep colliding.
