In 1920s British India, Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee) strikes up an unlikely friendship with Adela Quested, a young Englishwoman engaged to local magistrate Ronny Heaslop, and with schoolmaster Cyril Fielding. Judy Davis’s Adela arrives curious about the country and uneasy about the world she is marrying into, but a trip to the Marabar Caves turns that meeting of cultures into scandal. As rumor and prejudice spread through the colonial community, personal loyalties are tested against the rigid codes of the British Raj.
