After leaving a San Francisco veterans hospital, Eddie Rice is a decorated war veteran with amnesia heading back to Los Angeles to find out who he was before the war. John Payne is Eddie, following a trail that leads not to a homecoming but to old underworld ties, a crime boss who knows his name, and a murder charge that lands on him before his memory returns. Sonny Tufts and Ellen Drew are part of the Los Angeles world waiting for him, as Eddie pieces together a past that may explain why so many people want him found before he can figure himself out.
