Gloomy Sunday

The story

Budapest in the 1930s: a restaurant owner hires a pianist for his dining room, and both men fall for the waitress Ilona, whose presence inspires the musician’s only composition, “Gloomy Sunday.” As the song spreads beyond the restaurant, its melancholy becomes linked to a string of suicides, turning the trio’s private arrangement into something increasingly exposed. Erika Marozsán and Joachim Król lead a story of jealousy, desire, and art that shifts again when a German suitor enters the picture and the Nazi era begins to press in on their lives.
