Hilary Swank is Erin Gruwell, a young teacher whose first assignment puts her in front of a class of teenagers shaped by gang violence and racial division in a California high school. As distrust and conflict spill into the classroom, Erin pushes past the standard curriculum, asking her students to write about their own lives and to see one another beyond the lines that separate them. Inspired by a true story, the film follows the students’ diaries, their growing sense of voice, and Erin’s effort to get them thinking about an education — and a future — beyond day-to-day survival.
