The story

In Portland’s slacker-art scene, Luke Wilson is David, an aspiring artist and marijuana dealer whose romance with Serena starts to collapse after his house burns down. Alicia Witt’s Serena heads for New York with junkie musician Tommy, leaving David to hole up with his stash and the oddball crowd around him. As he drifts through apartments, parties, and half-finished paintings, the film follows a breakup through a haze of weed, aimlessness, and bohemian chaos, with Brittany Murphy, Jack Black, and Andy Dick turning up along the edges of David’s orbit.
