After her husband disappears with the down payment for a new home, Ray Eddy is left scrambling to support her two sons in a frozen border town. Melissa Leo's Ray finds a risky source of cash with Lila Littlewolf (Misty Upham), a Mohawk woman making runs across the St. Lawrence from Canada into the U.S. As the two women ferry undocumented immigrants over ice and through reservation land, the film stays close to the pressures pushing them together: debt, custody, hunger, and the brutal winter around them.
