After World War I leaves him broke and adrift, James Cagney is Eddie Bartlett, a veteran who starts out driving a cab and builds a bootlegging business on the side as Prohibition takes hold. Eddie pulls together two men from his past: Lloyd Hart, an army buddy trying to make it as a lawyer, and Humphrey Bogart’s George Hally, a former saloon keeper with ambitions of his own. As the liquor trade turns into a racket, friendships harden into rivalries, and Jean Sherman (Priscilla Lane) becomes another fault line in a world of speakeasies, fast money, and shifting loyalties.
