In the early 20th century, British officer Percy Fawcett is sent to Brazil to map a border and comes back convinced that the Amazon holds traces of an ancient city long dismissed as fantasy. Back in England, his claims meet skepticism, but the idea takes hold of him and turns each return to the jungle into a harder, more dangerous search. Expeditions stall in brutal terrain, supplies run thin, and the obsession strains the life he leaves behind with his wife Nina. As Fawcett pushes deeper into the rainforest with fellow explorer Henry Costin, played by Robert Pattinson, what begins as a surveying mission becomes a years-long pursuit that remakes his family and his future.
