Solomon Northup is a free Black man from upstate New York when he is abducted in the pre-Civil War United States and sold into slavery. Chiwetel Ejiofor is Solomon, taken south to Louisiana plantations where forced labor, physical abuse, and the whims of different owners shape each day. Michael Fassbender's plantation master is among the men who control his fate, even as Solomon tries to hold on to his dignity and any chance of getting word back to his family. Directed by Steve McQueen, the film follows Northup through years of captivity in the 1840s South.
